Explanation

The use of electrical and magnetic fields outside of medicine has been greatly expanded. Both nerve and muscle cells are stimulated by external fields to, for example, improve cognitive abilities or induce targeted muscle contractions.

Electrical muscle stimulation has established itself as a new training method, especially in the fitness sector, and is increasingly offered.

For devices used in this area, such as low-frequency, direct current, and magnetic field devices, internationally recommended limits exist (ICNIRP 2009, 2010) that ensure protection against acute health effects. Above these limits, side effects cannot be ruled out in case of improper use or lack of knowledge of contraindications. The basic effect of these devices is based on the stimulation of nerves and muscles due to the additional electric fields occurring in the body. In muscle stimulation, if the stimulation is too strong for the treated person, muscle pain and muscle damage can occur. In extreme cases, muscle death and dissolution are even possible.

In the case of muscular overload, the concentrations of certain proteins in the blood increase, which can lead to kidney damage. The physical characteristics of the treated person must also be considered. For example, small and slender individuals are always more stressed than large and strong individuals.

Untrained muscle cells also react more sensitively to the same stimulation than trained ones. Therefore, untrained individuals can be damaged more quickly and severely.

To minimize risks, the NiSV sets requirements regarding the qualification of persons using non-ionizing radiation sources (expertise).
